Dr Paul Miller

Dr Paul Miller was until recently Consultant Gastroenterologist and Lipidologist at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (Withington and Wythenshawe Hospitals).

He did his preclinical training at Oxford University where he also obtained a D Phil degree in Respiratory Physiology before moving to Guy's Hospital, London for his clinical years. He subsequently held posts at Guy's, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, The Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital and St James' University Hospital, Leeds before moving to Manchester in 1975. After registration he spent a brief time working for the Save the Children Fund during the Nigerian (Biafran) Civil War.

Dr Miller has been interested in disorders of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism since 1970 and in the late seventies, as an MRC Travelling Fellow, he did research at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center, Houston. He was a founder member of the British Hyperlipidaemia Association Committee (now HEART UK) and was treasurer of the Association and chairman of the Association's Clinical Practice and Epidemiology Committee. He was also formerly treasurer of the British Atherosclerosis Society. His research interest in Gastroenterology has mainly concerned the problem of peptic ulcer relapse and Helicobacter infection.

Dr Miller has had a longstanding interest in postgraduate medical education. He was Regional Adviser to the Royal College of Physicians (1987-93) and Chairman of the Specialty Training Committee in Medicine for the North West Region (1993-7) during the years in which the Calman reforms were implemented. He has been associated with the Manchester Medical Society for many years and is a former President of the Section of Medicine. He was the first Chairman of Council of the Society (1997-2001) and was President in 2003-4. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 2009.

In 1983 Dr Miller joined the Cases Committee of the Medical Protection Society and became a member of its Council in 1995. He became Chairman of the Council in 1996, a post which he held until 2003. He was chairman of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy in the University of Manchester (1997-2004). He is currently Regional Sub-Dean of the Royal Society of Medicine.
